Thanks Eli!! We sure need to hear these truths in churches at KNUST (and elsewhere)! In too many cases so called service to God is really nothing other than a means of soothing our consciences and (attempting to) coax God that He might pour out His blessings (preferably in monetary terms, CWA, future self-aggrandizement projects and such others). Upholding God’s exigencies seem to be relegated to the ‘unimportant’ section. Furthermore, biblical Joseph-like examples seem to corroborate our secret (and not-so-secret) pursuits of greatness. Where we stumble across certain details (e.g. the reasons for naming his sons the way Joseph did and his describing Egypt, where he occupied the most “enviable” position of prime minister, as the land of his affliction) we quickly find explanations to shrug it off because, after all, faithfulness to God MUST earn you status, fame…and glamour (ah, yes, glamour!). What about God’s purposes? well…isn’t He preoccupied with getting us into Heaven? A little bit of personal glory can’t be that bad ESPECIALLY since He uses it for His glory too. How many of us are on our way to become Abrahams, Moses Isiahs, Johns and such others who stood in the Lord’s counsel? Men and women whose agendas they considered as dung and discarded in order to embrace the Father’s purposes? One of my favourite preachers (pst Carter Conlon) said in one sermon something along the lines of, is it ok if God’s call on your life is, as a single mother, to work hard and raise your three children in the ways of the Lord and never get your name out there? Thanks to our defeat in Eden, the race to be gods is still on sometimes against our will but oftentimes with our active participation (sadly). May the Lord help us each to say yes and amen to Christ’s instructions about what is required to come after him, to deny oneself, to pick-up one’s cross daily and to follow Him – that’s the road of victory over self.
