I do indeed understand this new perspective of thinking.
Thanks for the enlightenment. ?
This is a very legitimate concern. I really struggled with this chapter and it is out of this struggle that we decided to deal with it.
So this is what i think. I think paul brings in the created order (Adam was created before Eve) issue here again because we see a repitition of the same scenario that led to the fall of man. Adam (man) was given information/a message he was supposed to relay to Eve (woman); he didnt communicate it well enough to Eve (woman)… that led to her sinning and causing Adam to sin too. In the biblical times, women werent allowed to get formal education in anything. So it is a huge feather in the cup of Christianity that paul even admonished the women to learn in quietness. At least the women in the church were getting education compared to those outside. The question is, is someone who hasn’t been allowed to be schooled her whole life qualified to teach anybody else? Mind you, their male counterparts were taught the law as early as 12 years. If these women were allowed to teach without being adequately instructed by the men (who were more educated than they were) wouldnt it repeat the ‘Garden of Eden’ scenario? Where man didnt instruct his wife adequately enough, hence she ended up falling victim to the temptation of the devil. Paul was very strict with the propagation of false doctrine. I believe that is what made him say what he said. If he were against women teaching in churches generally then that would contradict his commendation of Phebe in Romans 16 and also Dorcas in Acts 9 who was a DISCIPLE.
Centuries down the line, “women being restricted from teaching in church” doesn’t necessarily hold. Why? Women and men are both instructed and taught the word of God as early as their sunday school days. Therefore we see a level plain so far as education between men and women is concerned. That is why we have such powerful female preachers as Joyce Meyer, Juanita Bynum and hopefully you. Lol. This may not fully answer you, but i believe it gives you a new perspective to look at this issue. Paul used a historically acceptable fact to make a culturally and socially relevant decree. This is my take on the issue. Try using the Amplified Bible – it helps.
]]>Now, many have argued that the reason Paul instructed the women to stay quiet is because of the culture of their time, blah blah blah, and that it’s not necessarily the case today, that because times have changed, women can be preachers etc.
My problem is with the REASON he gave for his statement. His stated reasons were not such that they could be contained within that particular time; they were, in fact, based in history, thus stretching as far as the idea that humans are born in sin and need to be saved, thanks to Adam and Eve. The reason he gives is “For Adam was not the one deceived; it was the woman who was deceived and became a sinner.” (NIV) For this PARTICULAR reason stated, he suggests that women mustn’t assume authority over a man. Given that this is his reason, and history doesn’t change, doesn’t it mean that this command still holds? It doesn’t seem to have much to do with spiritual immaturity but more to do with the nature inherited by women from Eve.
This implies that we, as women, can never truly break out of this situation. What’s your take on this?
